There are different fence laws in almost every state to protect livestock, people, and property from damage that livestock can cause inside their property line. There are two kinds of laws: open range and closed range. States choose one of two new fence patterns, though some states let counties choose their own.

In an open-range area neighborhood, animals are free to roam, and neighbors build fences to keep them out of their yards or property lines. As a general fence law, many states say a person who doesn’t put up a wall can’t blame a neighbor whose animals hurt their property if they don’t have a fence.
